AMELIA BROKE into a grin at the sight of her father. They’d always been close. Unlike her mother, who would have been far better suited to raising Winnie, her father was quiet and intelligent. He understood her and encouraged her when so many others thought her pursuits silly for a woman.

He was making his way toward them, with a purpose she found perplexing until she felt Will flex beside her. Then she realized the men had locked eyes.

Will bent down, “If your father does not approve, I need you to know that my offer still stands. I care not about your dowry.”

Shock momentarily let her speechless, but then happiness radiated from deep within. Not that she wanted to disobey her father, but it made a difference that he wanted her even without her dowry or her social connections.

“Amelia,” her father called out as he approached.

“Papa,” she stepped a foot towards him as she held out her hands to grasp his. He placed a kiss on her cheek.

When he pulled away, his eyes searched her face. “Are you enjoying yourself?”

“Immensely,” she gushed. “There is someone I want you to meet.”

The corners of his mouth turned down but he gave a nod as he stepped towards Will. “Mr. William Maddox, may I introduce you to my father, The Earl of Witherford.”

“Mr. Maddox?” He gave him the once over. “Are you related to His Grace?”

“He is my first cousin, my lord,” Will answered.

“So your father owns the shipping company that is located nearby?” Her father relaxed just a touch. It was subtle and another may not have noticed.

“Yes, my lord.” Will’s answers seemed to be getting shorter but her father relaxed a little more.

“William…” Lord Witherford looked up to the ceiling as if searching his memory. “You are the first born son?”

“That is correct, my lord.”

Will took a breath but Amelia interrupted, turning to face him. “I just realized that if you are here, you are not spending Christmastide with your family.”

He gave her a gentle smile. “It was my plan to return home tomorrow but plans change.”

She looked up at him, his face as soft as a man of his strength could look. It melted her heart. “I wouldn’t want you to forgo them on my behalf.”

He gave her a tiny wink. It was the side that her father couldn’t see. “I’m sure it will all work out.”

Her father cleared his throat. “I’d like to speak with you in the morning.”

Will nodded his agreement.

Her father stepped around them to greet her mother and Will bent down to whisper. “Any advice you could give me would be helpful.”

She smiled. “I’m sure he will favor your suit.” She cleared her throat. “But he values traits of mine that many do not.”

He gave her a dashing smile. “So it will help if he sees that I value the same?”

She nodded, stepping just a touch closer. “I will have to leave soon. My father will want us to retire with him so that we might discuss things further.
